Not only is Bali Hai Golf Club one of the Vegas area's best upscale courses, the location on the south end of the Strip in the shadows of Mandalay Bay and across the street from McCarran International Airport is unbeatable. It's the Strip's only golf course open to the public.

When the Falls Golf Club, the third course in the spectacular Lake Las Vegas Resort, opened in 2002, the front nine merely served as a prelude to what awaited golfers when they hit the slopes of the more dramatic back nine. But that was six years ago. Since then, the course and its surrounding development have matured, and designer Tom Weiskopf has returned to add a few touches here and there.

When golf course architect Bob Cupp went about the business of designing the 27 holes at Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas, he knew he had to include design features to test the better players in the game, and that meant plenty of bunkers, doglegs and water. You thought the boys in Las Vegas held a stranglehold on showy, over-the-top golf courses? ArrowCreek Country Club is Reno's rebuttal. This wicked two-course complex in the place self-dubbed "The Biggest Little City in The World" is part of a largely underrated Sierra golf scene that includes Reno, Lake Tahoe and tons of wonderfully little towns along the mountain way.

Wolf Creek Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev. is the kind of course you travel for, make a special side trip to play. It's that uniquely memorable. And plain cool. There is just something about teeing off from a sky high plateau and watching your ball soar through the air down to the fairway. Everyone loves to see their ball fly. You'll likely never see it fly quite like it does at Wolf Creek. It's enough to make the most jaded golfer giggle. At least inside.

Genoa Lakes is both typical and unique. Its housing approach can be found on a 100 other courses easy. Yet its setting is still special enough that there are dashes of magic left. Like a deer cutting you off in traffic. Or the moos of the neighbor cows serving as background noise to a putt.

Dayton Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Nev. is a great change-of-pace High Sierras golf course. Its look are very distinctive for the area and it is greener than you'd expect given how fiercely the sun seems to beat down in the valley. One of the mid-priced courses in the area, Dayton Valley provides old-school strategy rather than eye-popping wows.

It sounds sacrilegious to put the modestly named Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course above Pebble Beach. You half expected a golf god to shoot down lightning bolts from the clear blue morning sky. Or at least find Pebble Beach owner Clint Eastwood in your face, sticking a finger in your chest, puffing, "Do you feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?" It turns out those words get spoken often on this George Fazio design that's almost right behind the hulking casinos on Lake Tahoe Boulevard and yet still plays out as a nature wonderland seldom seen in today's house-happy golf world.

Everyone at the Desert Course at Primm Valley wants to tell you how forgiving this Tom Fazio course is. Visions of wide fairways and balls easily located in sparse desert brush dance in your head. By the first tee, you’re convinced a leisurely round awaits (the staff here is very friendly and persuasive, after all). By the second tee, though, the game's up and it's quickly apparent this course has long, nasty, score mashing teeth.

Primm Valley Golf Club is Vegas showmanship at its finest, carried out where you'd least expect. The pairing of high-end golf designer Tom Fazio and a Primm Valley casino complex that's more Tupelo, Miss., than Vegas might seem like a strange one, but there is little question Fazio is capable of wowing any client base. Still, with that said, while the Lakes is a good course by many standards, it’s not one of Fazio's better efforts.

Interstate 15 is the main highway for countless folks coming to Las Vegas from Southern California for a quick weekend jaunt. The savvy set has figured out, though, that you don't need to go all the way to Sin City to get a quick fix of gambling and golf. Primm Valley Golf Club , just 45 minutes south of Las Vegas, boasts three casinos and 36 holes of Tom Fazio-designed golf. Between the Lakes Course and the newer Desert Course, guests get two very distinct tracks.
