On what other golf course in Southern Nevada will you find thousands of Carolina pine trees? Where else can you find a two-tiered, climate-controlled practice center? And how many golf courses are just 10 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip and 15 minutes from the airport?

Badlands Golf Club is the epitome of what a desert golf course should be, Kevin Iole writes. You frequently have to carry the ball over the rugged desert terrain and, to score well, have to place the ball in the proper side of the fairway. Good shots are rewarded, but errant shots are frequently penal, sometimes exceptionally so.

When golf course architect Bob Cupp went about the business of designing the 27 holes at Silverstone Golf Club in Las Vegas, he knew he had to include design features to test the better players in the game, and that meant plenty of bunkers, doglegs and water. It also meant length: Silverstone has the longest par 5 in Nevada.

Plenty of modern golf courses in southern Nevada will dazzle with spectacular views, impeccable conditions and difficult holes, but few will give you a real sense of Las Vegas history. One exception is Las Vegas National, one of the few remnants of how life used to be in Sin City.

If you like sand, you'll love the Arroyo Course at Red Rock Country Club. The Arnold Palmer signature golf course has close to 100 bunkers, but even more importantly, some 40 acres that used to be irrigated turf have been returned to the desert - ergo more sand ... and rocks and cacti.

It doesn't take a great deal of imagination at Royal Links Golf Club to get a feel for the history of British Open golf. Many of its holes were inspired by British Open host courses, including the revered St. Andrews.

Not only is Bali Hai Golf Club one of the Vegas area's best upscale courses, the location on the south end of the Strip in the shadows of Mandalay Bay and across the street from McCarran International Airport is unbeatable. It's the Strip's only golf course open to the public.

They say the devil's greatest trick was convincing the world he didn't exist. In golf, the equivalent might be a master-planned community where players don't recall there were homes around the course. Such is the case at Siena Golf Club. Somehow, architects Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley managed to please not only its landlord, but the golfing public as well.

The staff was courteous, the food at the restaurant better than most AND the course was everything that it is purported to be ... kind to the better players who hit the ball down the middle, yet punishing for those who err a little on their delivery."

At Rio Secco Golf Club, you have to not only find the greens, but the right portion of the greens. Get above the hole, and a two-putt in many cases is almost impossible. Put it in a really bad place, and a four-putt is a possibility, even for skilled players. "It's a tough challenge, but fair," Head Golf Professional Charles Packard said. "The biggest challenge comes on the greens."

The 27-hole Black Mountain Golf & Country Club was founded in 1957, making it the third oldest golf course in the Las Vegas area. "It's a very traditional style club," said Joan Philips, director of golf at the Henderson facility. "The members here have always been very relaxed, and it's very affordable."

Billy Casper's playing skills have largely outpaced his work in designing courses, though that's not obvious to those who play at Revere Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada. That's because Casper and partner Greg Nash designed a marvelous 36-hole Las Vegas-area facility that leaves you wanting more. The courses fit the surroundings perfectly and look as if they were natural outgrowths instead of man-made designs.

Located approximately 20 minutes south of the Las Vegas Strip, DragonRidge Golf Club was designed by the team of Jay Morrish and David Druzisky, who took the rocky desert landscape and carved the course through the land's rugged hills and valleys. Best of all, DragonRidge's back nine holes have plenty of black lava rock and feature more gambling options than a parlay bet at Caesar's sports book.

Tom Weiskopf's The Falls is the Las Vegas golf equivalent of the Stratosphere or Cirque du Soleil. You know it's for show, but it's thoroughly enthralling nevertheless. You want dramatic? The Falls is Sean Penn in full ham-it-up, Oscar-seeking "I-Am-Sam" form. It is so over the top it practically clonks you over the head with its grand ambitions. And you know what? It works.

It was a slow start for Boulder Creek Golf Club, as far as finances go, but now things are starting to turn around. The stellar municipal track in Boulder City, located about 25 minutes from the Las Vegas strip,
opened its third nine-hole championship golf course, Eldorado, last fall, and the city, which owns the course, took over management of Boulder Creek in mid-March from Triad Management Company.

You thought the boys in Las Vegas held a stranglehold on showy, over-the-top golf courses? ArrowCreek Country Club is Reno's rebuttal. This wicked two-course complex in the place self-dubbed "The Biggest Little City in The World" is part of a largely underrated Sierra golf scene that includes Reno, Lake Tahoe and tons of wonderfully little towns along the mountain way.

Wolf Creek Golf Club in Mesquite, Nev. is the kind of course you travel for, make a special side trip to play. It's that uniquely memorable. And plain cool. There is just something about teeing off from a sky high plateau and watching your ball soar through the air down to the fairway. Everyone loves to see their ball fly. You'll likely never see it fly quite like it does at Wolf Creek. It's enough to make the most jaded golfer giggle. At least inside.
